Eight pieces, out of the vat last week and hemmed, pressed and ready to send.
Each one comes in three blues: Pale, Mid and Deep. Every piece is a little different from the next; the product pages show three more from the same batch.

In the vat the dye is yellow. Lifted out, the cloth turns green, then blue, as the air gets to it. Each trip in and out adds a layer.
Pick the shade on any product page. We dip to order within the batch, so what you pick is what you get, give or take the cloth’s own mind.

Shibori comes from a Japanese verb meaning to wring or squeeze. Every pattern here is cloth that was squeezed, so the dye couldn’t reach it.
1.0Itajimefolded and clampedThe cloth is folded into a packet and clamped between two blocks. Where the blocks press, the dye can’t reach, so one clamp prints a whole grid, mirrored at every fold.Shop Itajime
2.0Arashi“storm”, wrapped on a poleThe cloth is wrapped on the diagonal round a pole, bound with thread and pushed down into pleats. The lines always run on the slant, like driving rain.Shop Arashi
3.0Kumo“spider”, pleated and boundA pinch of cloth is pleated finely and bound tight with thread. The tip stays blue, the binding stays white, and the pleats make the rays.Shop Kumo
4.0Kanoko“fawn spots”Small sections are bound with thread all over the cloth. Each one comes out as a pale ring round a blue dot.Shop Kanoko
5.0NuistitchedRows of running stitch are pulled very tight and knotted before the first dip. Opened out, every row is a line of tiny white dashes.Shop Nui[ Reviews ]

Bought two in Mid. They’re heavier than any tea towel I own and the squares are all slightly different, which is the point. Arrived in two days.
Expensive, and worth it. It came wrapped in paper with a card saying which batch it was from and how many dips. It’s on our bed now.
Lovely towel. The Pale is paler than it looked on my phone, so check the close-up photo. I’d buy Mid next time.
