A throw takes a whole morning to fold and two of us to lift out of the vat. Round blocks, clamped on a packet folded eight times, leave the pale moons.

Washed cotton, soft from the first day, heavy enough for the end of a bed or the back of a sofa.

Itajime, folded and clamped. The cloth is folded into a packet and clamped between two blocks. Where the blocks press, the dye can’t reach, so one clamp prints a whole grid, mirrored at every fold.

Expensive, and worth it. It came wrapped in paper with a card saying which batch it was from and how many dips. It’s on our bed now.

I drove over to collect it. They showed me the vat. It smells of the vat for a week, then it doesn’t.
