Dipsacus laciniatus

Cut-leaved teasel

The name comes from the Greek for thirst: water collects in the cup where the leaves meet the stem. Dried teasel heads once raised the nap on woollen cloth.

Gelatin silver print. J. Paul Getty Museum, 84.XM.142.3.
