The Ninth Lantern
Nell lights eight lanterns every winter night. This year there is a ninth hook, and nobody remembers what it is for.
Nell has a pole, a box of matches and a round of eight lanterns strung across the lane. Tonight there is a ninth hook on the line, and a snowfall so heavy the village has gone quiet to listen to it.
She asks the baker, the boatman and a fox who is only passing through. Nobody hung the hook. Everybody has an idea about what it is for.
Our winter play, performed after the clocks go back, when dusk comes early enough for children who have school in the morning.
