The Fox Who Borrowed the Moon
A fox who cannot sleep takes the moon down to read by. The village has to ask for it back.
Every night the fox reads until the candle goes out, and every night the candle goes out too soon. So one clear October evening she climbs the church roof, unhooks the moon, and carries it home under her arm like a loaf.
The village wakes to a sky with a hole in it. The boatman cannot find the lock. The owls are furious. Only Nell the lamplighter thinks to follow the silver pawprints up the hill, and to knock.
A play about borrowing, giving back, and the particular dark of a sky that is missing something. The moon is a disc of oiled paper; when it is carried across the screen, the whole valley changes colour.
