Linnell is a flower shop with a workroom behind the counter. Everything that goes out of the door is made at the bench you can see from the till: bouquets to order, wedding and event flowers, and the bunches in the buckets out front.
Clare buys at the wholesale flower market on Monday and Thursday mornings, and from three growers within twenty miles on Tuesdays and Fridays. What comes in decides what we make.

We send it in bud
The day it arrives
In bud
Most of what we send goes out in bud. It travels better, and it opens in their kitchen instead of ours.
The next day
Opening
The outer petals loosen first. A cool room makes it last longer; a warm one opens it faster.
A few days on
Open
Take a centimetre off the stems and change the water. Keep the vase away from the fruit bowl: ripe fruit gives off ethylene, which ages flowers.
Before it goes over
Fully open
A rose lasts six to fourteen days in a vase. This is the best of it.

What peopleask us
Yes, if you order by 12 noon Monday to Friday, or 10am on Saturday, and the address is within 12 miles of the shop.
We leave the flowers with a neighbour or somewhere safe you name, and put a card through the door saying where. They travel in a bag of water, so a few hours is fine.
Yes, from what's in this week. Call us and we'll tell you what's in the buckets, or choose Florist's choice and leave it to us.
Yes: wreaths, sprays and coffin flowers, delivered to the funeral director. Call the shop and we'll talk it through.
When your order reaches us we check it, then ring you to take a card payment. Nothing is charged before that call.
Six to twelve months. We take two weddings a weekend, and June and September go first.
£800 for a wedding, which is roughly a bridal bouquet, two bridesmaids, six buttonholes and the ceremony flowers.
Yes, up to 30 miles away. Further than that, ask us and we'll tell you whether it works.
Some can be bought in from abroad. We'll tell you what that does to the price and how they will look on the day, then you decide.
No. We arrange in water, in chicken wire and on pin holders, and take the mechanics home with us afterwards.
