Our lane at the back of the workshop is authorised by RAR. Ana Bârsan, a RAR-certified inspector, runs it. Most cars are through in about 30 minutes.

When is my car due?
Work out your next ITP.
A new car's first ITP is due three years after it was first registered. After that it is every two years, and every year once the car is more than 12 years old.
Our reading of the RAR intervals for cars. The date on your last ITP paper is the one that counts.
What's checked
Nine checks, in the order we do them.
- 01
Identification
Chassis number, seats and colour checked against your talon or CIV.
- 02
General look-over
Body, visible parts and any structural rust, walking round the car.
- 03
Exhaust and emissions
Gas analyser or opacimeter on the tailpipe at idle and with revs. Electric cars skip this step.
- 04
Brakes on the rollers
Each axle on the roller tester: service brake and parking brake, left wheel against right.
- 05
Steering and suspension
The play plates shake each front wheel while Ana watches the joints, links, bushes and dampers from the pit.
- 06
Lights and headlamp aim
Headlamps, stop lamps, indicators and the reversing lamp; the aimer checks where the beam falls.

Doors, glass, wipers, horn
Doors and windows, horn, wipers, demister and the windscreen.

Tyres and leaks
Tread depth, uneven wear and the DOT code; any oil, brake fluid or coolant leaking.

The kit in your boot
Two warning triangles, an approved first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher still in date.
What to bring
Two papers and three things in the boot.
Missing a triangle or an extinguisher out of date? The desk sells both, so the car does not fail for it.

- The registration certificate (talon)
- The vehicle identity card (CIV)
In the boot
- Two reflective warning triangles
- An approved first-aid kit
- A fire extinguisher still in date
Why cars fail
The usual reasons, and the bay that fixes them.
If something fails, Ana shows you the reading and the part. The re-check after a repair here is free within 15 days.
- Minor
- Noted on the paper; the car passes.
- Major
- Repair it, then come back for a re-check.
- Dangerous
- The car fails on the spot and should not be driven until fixed.
