Lifted
What it is
Anthocyanin pigments bound up with grape tannins. Fresh it is purple; overnight it browns as the pigments polymerise with the tannins.
How fast it sets
Overnight is too long.
Lift with
Oxygen bleach
sodium percarbonate
How we lift it
- Blot, don't rub: rubbing drives the pigment deeper and spreads the ring.
- Flush with cool water from the back of the cloth, into a towel.
- Soak whites in oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) for an hour, then wash.
Never
Hot water, which sets the tannin; chlorine bleach on coloured linen.
