What it is
Fat doesn't colour linen, it fills the air between the fibres so light passes through: the cloth looks grey and see-through. Left for weeks, it oxidises and yellows.

How we lift it
- Cover with cornflour for twenty minutes to draw the oil out.
- Work in washing-up liquid; it is built to hold fat in water.
- Wash as hot as the linen allows.
Never
Cold water alone: it beads off the oil and does nothing.
