Come along
Join a
moth night
Fridays and Saturdays from March to November. Free, all ages, no experience needed: we bring the lamp, the pots, the field guides and the tea. You bring warm layers and a torch with a red setting.
The next
nights
Times are worked out for the heath’s own latitude and longitude. The lamp goes on half an hour after sunset; the count starts just after sunrise the next morning. Moths come best on warm, still, cloudy nights with little moon, so the darkest nights are marked.

- Dusk. Meet at the car park by the sandy track. We walk ten minutes to the sheet.
- The lamp. Stay an hour or stay till midnight. Children can pot and name moths with us.
- First light. Come back for the count, if you can face the alarm. Every moth is let go.
The Heath trap is named after its designer, John Heath, not after heaths.
