Free swing

One beat, slowed forty times

An eighth of
a second

The list below follows the mechanism on the left as it runs. Most of the time nothing touches the balance at all — that freedom is what keeps the rate steady.

  1. 01

    Free swing

The fork rests against its banking pin. The balance swings out on its hairspring, touching nothing, for nearly all of the beat.

  2. 02

    Unlocking

Coming back through the centre, the impulse jewel on the roller strikes the fork's horn and draws a pallet stone off the escape tooth.

  3. 03

    Impulse

The freed tooth slides across the pallet's face and pushes the fork, which pushes the balance: the energy of the mainspring, delivered in a fiftieth of the swing.

  4. 04

    Drop & lock

The wheel jumps forward half a tooth and stops against the other pallet. Click. The escape wheel has turned 9°.

Going train

From one turn
in seven hours

to one turn in five seconds. Each wheel drives the next one's pinion; multiply the ratios and the barrel's slow unwinding becomes the escape wheel's steady step.
