The studio

DRUM is a risograph press and small publisher in Rotterdam. We print posters, zines, books and record sleeves one colour at a time: soy ink, pushed through a stencil wrapped around a spinning drum.

Core inks

Riso ink lives in drums, one colour each. We keep nine in rotation and print them over each other to make the rest. This block is printed in the ninth, Medium Blue, and each ink below is printed over it.

How a print happens
  1. 01MasterA thermal head burns the artwork into a stencil film, one master per colour.
  2. 02YellowLightest ink first: a halftone floor for everything after it.
  3. 03PinkLOUD, in fluorescent pink. Over the yellow it prints red.
  4. 04BlueQUIET, in Medium Blue. Where it lands on yellow, green.
  5. 05KeyBlack type last, so the small print stays sharp.
