Care

Five kinds of care, one front door.

What happens, how long it takes, what it costs and who you'll see. Not sure which you need? Book a GP appointment and start there.

01 Family medicine

Twenty minutes with a GP.

For the cough that won't go, the mole you keep checking, the tiredness, the letter for work. Dr Ruth Linden sees adults in Room 1 every weekday: from 08:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and until 19:20 on Monday and Thursday.

Seeing the same doctor over time is linked to fewer hospital admissions, so we book you with the doctor you saw last time whenever we can. If you need a test or a scan, it usually happens in the same visit.

02 Cardiology

Your heart, checked in one afternoon.

Dr Amara Okoro, a consultant cardiologist, sees patients on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons until 19:20. A first visit includes a 12-lead ECG, done by Jo just before you go in.

An ECG takes about ten seconds: ten small stickers record your heart from twelve angles. If symptoms come and go, a Holter monitor records for 24 hours while you carry on, with a button to press when you feel something.

03 Children's health

Babies to eighteen.

Dr Clara Voss is a consultant paediatrician. She sees babies, children and teenagers in Room 2, and scans children's hips, tummies and kidneys herself, so you don't come back on another day.

Bring the Red Book, the record you were given when your child was born: it holds their growth, checks and vaccinations. A favourite toy helps too. Jo gives children's vaccinations in the treatment room.

04 Ultrasound

A scan, and the report before you leave.

Dr Priya Raman, a consultant radiologist, scans adults on weekday mornings except Thursday. The person who does your scan reads it, so the report is ready the same day.

Ultrasound uses sound too high to hear, above 20,000 Hz, and builds the picture from its echoes. It needs no needles and no sedation. For a pelvic scan you'll need a full bladder, because water carries the sound well; for an abdominal scan, an empty stomach.

05 Blood and lab tests

Blood clinic from 08:00.

Jo Mercer takes blood in the treatment room from 08:00 on weekdays and 09:00 on Saturdays. Fasting tests go first, so you can have breakfast sooner.

Several tubes come from one needle, usually from the vein inside the elbow. Samples taken before 11:00 go to the lab with the first courier, and most results reach your portal the same afternoon with a note from your doctor.
