The critic, round 1

Tack & Halyard is a strong use of the paul-kalkbrenner backbone. The subject fits it well: signal flags are square colour blocks, so the photo-glyph, the ■ kicker and the pixel wipe now carry meaning instead of decoration. The canvas cloth engine gives every flag real shading, waves and seams, and the Hoists sky renders and the Tsushima archive scene come close to the backbone's art direction. What holds it back from Site-of-the-Day level: the hero wordmark sits smaller and quieter than the reference; the "1857" duotone and the yellow-band hoist render read as grey or yellow blur, not art; the red Order band and footer repeat unchanged on every page; the 36-row grey Code accordion is monotonous at rest; and there is one hard mobile overflow.

  • The loader works as a signature moment: the Blue Peter cloth fills the screen, shrinks into the wordmark slot and becomes the glyph between 'Tack' and 'Halyard'. It is a direct, meaningful translation of the kalkbrenner photo-glyph settle (motion_intro).
  • The pinned 'one flag, sewn' loft scene is the best part of the site. The pixel-mosaic draft becomes cut panels, then a lit waving Zulu, with the stepper and live readouts (seams 0→312 cm, stitches 0→2,499, wind calm→F4). It reads clearly frame by frame (motion_mid1/mid2).
  • The cloth engine gives flags real presence: pole, heading tape, fold shading, sky backdrops on the Hoists and Archive cards. No clip-art, no placeholder boxes.

How it was madefree-rein subject: a Leith loft that hand-sews the International Code of Signals; one canvas cloth engine (36 ICS flags from one geometry file: weave, double-stitched seams, stamped heading, strip-sliced shaded wave, sky "photographs") draws every picture; kalkbrenner photo-glyph hero = full-screen Blue Peter loader shrinking into "Tack flag Halyard" on the measured timeline; kalkbrenner pixel mosaic tiles take a flag's colours = loft draft wipe, archive swap, route curtain (destination flag, e.g. C "Affirmative" for The Code), 404 N-over-C; ■ kickers are tiny code flags; pinned 5-beat "one Zulu, sewn" scene with real seam maths (312 cm, 2,499 stitches); greyscale scenes multiplied into bands; warm-fuzzy flip hovers, clip menu, giant-wordmark footer with a flag in the "&"; Wind toggle = motion switch; CPU-raster canvases for software Chromium; 17 recipes read, 16 ref images
