The evening

  1. Doors

The lamps go low and the benches go red. Walk the arch at your own pace; the plants are labelled, the staff are not in a hurry.

  2. The curl

A Cape sundew is fed a single fruit fly. Over the next hour or two the leaf wraps around it; we check back on the hour.

  3. Under the lens

A bladderwort in a dish of pond water, projected through a dark-field microscope. Watch the bladders wait.

  4. The bench

Choose your plant, learn to pot it, and take it home in a paper sleeve with a care card.

  5. Lights out

The glasshouse closes. The flytraps, as far as anyone can tell, carry on counting.

Book a night

before you come

Can I touch the plants?

Please don’t. Every trap that closes on nothing spends energy for no meal and needs most of a day to reopen. Spring the one on our home page instead.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, from about seven. It is dark, quiet and a little gothic; nothing bites that is larger than a fly.

What is included?

Entry, the evening programme and one plant up to £12 from the bench. Anything dearer, pay the difference.

Can you post plants?

No. They travel badly in the dark of a parcel. Every plant leaves the arch by hand.
