Vault fire, 1965

A Scotland Yard mystery with a vampire in a top hat, and the most searched-for American silent film.

Tod Browning made it for MGM with Lon Chaney, whose make-up for the part became one of the most reproduced images of the silent era.

The last known print was lost when fire swept through MGM's Vault 7 in 1965. In 2002 a reconstruction was assembled from the surviving production stills and the script, so the film now exists only as photographs laid end to end.
