The cloth of No. 17 seen close: selvedge denim

The cloth, close

Denim is a twill with an indigo warp and an undyed weft, which is why it's white inside. The red line marks the selvedge, the edge where the weft turns back on a shuttle loom.

Woven label reading Urajiro, Ibara, Japan, sewn onto cotton pocketing
Urajiro: Urajiro, “white back”, was the local name in Ibara for cloth dyed indigo on the face and left white on the reverse, which is how denim is still made.
