A woman in a long brown tweed coat and a dark scarf, looking back over her shoulder in coastal dunes The herringbone cloth of No. 18 seen close: brown and camel wool yarns in a twill that turns back on itself

The cloth, close

  1. No. 18

A herringbone coat by Strond. £420.

    One left, in medium.

  2. Herringbone

A broken twill: the diagonal turns back every few threads.

The name is from a herring's spine. Leggings woven this way have been found in the Alps from 800 BC.

  3. Harris Tweed

Woven by hand, at home, in the Outer Hebrides.

That's the law, since the Harris Tweed Act of 1993. The yarn is dyed and spun on the islands too.

Labels

Six labels, all of them small.

I buy from people I can phone. Four of them make their clothes in Britain.

The counter at Odell: this month's magazines on the wood, the shirt rail out of focus behind

The shop

I buy twice a year and never reorder.

When something sells I let it go. The next delivery brings something else, so the rail is never the same two months running. F.
