What it is

A loft in Leith that sews the International Code of Signals, all 36 flags.

What makes it work

A cloth engine draws every flag from one geometry file: weave, stitched seams and a shaded wave.

What the critic wrote

Tack & Halyard is a strong use of the paul-kalkbrenner backbone. The subject fits it well: signal flags are square colour blocks, so the photo-glyph, the ■ kicker and the pixel wipe now carry meaning instead of decoration. The canvas cloth engine gives every flag real shading, waves and seams, and the Hoists sky renders and the Tsushima archive scene come close to the backbone's art direction.
