Send us a recipe. We fire it.
Write it out in parts by weight. We mix 100 g, dip two tiles and fire them in the kiln you choose. One comes back to you; with your permission the other joins the library.
Testing is how a recipe from a book becomes a glaze you trust. Materials differ by supplier and kilns differ by shelf, so we fire every test with a witness cone beside it and write down what the kiln actually did.
- Fill in the form below, or bring the recipe on a Thursday evening.
- Send a bisqued tile of your own clay if you want it tested on your body. Otherwise we use ours.
- We weigh, sieve at 80 mesh and dip two tiles, single and double coat.
- Electric kiln on Tuesday, gas kiln on Friday.
- Your tile comes back within ten working days, with the firing log.

One tile, one glost firing
Tile 001, Longton Celadon, through a cone 10 reduction firing. Scroll to move through the 24 hours.
- 0 hRaw. A chalky grey coat on bisque. Nothing in it is glass yet.
- 5 hWater and carbon burn off. Damper open, spy holes out.
- 7 hReduction at 1,000 °C. We cut the air to the burners and the iron gives up oxygen. This is what turns it green.
- 9 hMelting. The coat fuses, boils and smooths over.
- 10 hCone 10 down at 1,285 °C. The witness cone bends until its tip meets the plaque. Burners off.
- 11 h +Cooling. The glaze shrinks more than the body, and over the next day it crackles. You can hear it ping.
