The critic, round 1
Lampblack is a coherent, well-conceived Thorgal descendant. Four gel-coloured shadow-screen 'doors' use a centred tag, title and bracketed CTA cluster with a diamond dot-nav, and each screen burns into the next. The pinned lamp-distance scene is a real, well-written signature idea. The procedural cut-paper art is consistent and charming, but it is flat next to Thorgal's painted, textured scenes (refs/thorgal/01, 03). The hero cluster also reads close to a reskin of Thorgal's layout. The paper sections lose rhythm: the company section has a large empty right column, the header collides with content, and the tour hero has a dead band. Mobile is the weakest part: workshop cards overflow at 627px, and the tour page is 425px wide, which clips the header and the CTAs. That hard failure alone keeps this under an 8.
- The concept joins subject and system: every picture is a shadow thrown by the lamp, the pointer is the lamp, and screens burn into each other. The art, navigation and transitions are one physical idea.
- The per-play gel palettes (fox blue, heron green, lighthouse amber, lantern rose) live only in the art, while the chrome stays ink/linen/gold. This follows Thorgal's section-theme crossfade rule and gives strong colour restraint.
- The lamp-distance pinned scene has live readouts (figure-to-linen distance, shadow size, soft edge) and a side diagram. It teaches something true and scrubs cleanly across frames.

How it was madefree-rein subject: a travelling shadow theatre that performs from the roof of a narrowboat on the Kennet & Avon; one canvas cut-paper shadow engine (gel light pool, cropped depth-blurred card layers, hand-authored jointed puppets with punched lace, split pins, rods) draws every picture: 4 sticky repertory screens burning into each other (thorgal dissolve + ember/char edge), play heroes, carousel scenes, workshop steps, silhouette portraits, tarot cast + live drawer, footer wordmark card, 404 lamp-out; the pointer is the lamp (shadows shift by d/(1−d)); dark-ink titles as shadows on the lit linen; tuscan roller-blind linen = loader/menu/route curtain, ticket shrink on play heroes; pinned lamp-distance scene with true optics (M = 120/(120−d), penumbra) ← pinned-zoom-scene; engine built for SwiftShader (CPU canvases, on-demand redraw); 17 recipes in full, 31 ref images
